Hearts of Gold and Checkered Flags: The Resilience of Calgary’s Croatian Community.

2026/2027 Board of Directors “Canadian Croatian Culture Centre”

In Calgary, the spirit of Croatia isn’t relegated to dusty archives or fading photographs. It is a living, breathing pulse found in the rhythmic sound of the tambura, the savory aroma of roasting pork and lamb, and the thunderous, rhythmic cheers that erupt whenever the national soccer team takes the pitch. As we move through 2026, our community stands as a shining testament to how tradition doesn’t just survive thousands of miles from the Adriatic coast, it thrives.

More Than a Hall: Building a “Dom” Through the tireless efforts of the Croatian Canadian Cultural Centre and Calgary’s Croatians have built something far more significant than a social club; they have built a home. Locally, we simply call it “Dom”, the Croatian word for home.

I grew up within those walls. It’s where I met lifelong friends, learned our history, and if I’m being honest, got into a little bit of trouble now and then. Those memories are the foundation of my identity.

Just yesterday, during our annual AGM, I was surprised and honoured to be nominated and invited to join our Cultural Centre board.

Being part of this community is deeply personal. It has its ups and downs, and navigating the passions of our people requires taking the good with the bad. But I can promise you this: being part of something bigger than yourself attracts a level of positivity and purpose to your life that you can’t find anywhere else.

The Croatian Church has always been the heart of our community. For all of us, our faith is what defines our Croatian identity. We are fortunate to have strong spiritual leaders guiding us and being there when we truly need them, no matter how hard they preach!

Alongside the church, the Croatian Heritage Society and the Calgary Croatian Sports Club remain the heartbeat of our youth engagement. For decades, they have ensured our children don’t just read about their history; they dance it and they “kick it.” The community’s dedication is the primary reason I felt called to re-engage with old friends.

Seeing the elders’ faces light up when they ask, “Whose son are you?” and watching their tears of joy when I answer is incredibly moving. As they share memories of me as a child, I am reminded why we do this. We are bridging the gap between the pioneers who built the Cultural Centre forty years ago and the next generation of kids who deserve to make the same incredible memories I have.

2024–2026 was A New Era of Collaboration, The last two years have been a whirlwind of progress. I have witnessed old grievances resolve and a new spirit of unity take hold. One of the proudest achievements of this period has been bringing the leadership of our various special groups together. This collaboration led to three major milestones:

Alberta Government Recognition: We successfully petitioned the Alberta Government to recognize May 30, 2025, as Croatia Heritage Day, a big thanks to honourable Minster Tanya Fir for supporting our our pledge as she supports so many diverse and multicultural groups. We celebrated this historic moment with the largest picnic Calgary has seen since I was a child!

The Formation of a United Society: The special committee of leaders we formed to unite our efforts has officially become its own society with its own board, dedicated solely to uniting everyone with Croatia Day Festivities.

We’ve expanded our professional reach by helping to form a branch of the Canadian Croatian Chamber of Commerce right here in Alberta, blending our cultural pride with economic growth.

Highlights of Our community calendar is more packed than ever, blending old-world tradition with modern Calgary life: Wine Tasting Nights: Celebrating Croatian viticulture and bringing neighbors together. A Hope for World Cup Hub: When the national team plays, we want the Centre transforms into a sea of red-and-white checkers.

We even discussed having the Centre named an official FIFA fan spot for upcoming matches! Thinking about this brings back memories of my brothers and I painting our faces in the washroom for a watch parties as kids.

40 Years of Excellence: 2024 marked the 40th anniversary of our Cultural Centre’s grand opening, and we’ve only gained momentum since then. Starting with a packed building of community members coming out to celebrate. Building a Future Together is what makes us “Calgary Strong” is our adaptability. Whether we are supporting local charities during the Calgary Stampede or hosting the Western Canadian Croatian Folklore Festival, we are an essential thread in the city’s multicultural fabric.

The Croatian Cultural Centre has grown because of generations of volunteers who gave their time freely. As I look toward the future, I am committed to maintaining that spirit. Being Croatian in Calgary isn’t just about where your ancestors came from; it’s about the strength of the community you choose to build right here.

I’m Canadian-Croatian and proud. Some people say we are “all talk and no action,” but I would argue there are enough of us to create real agency for change! I look forward to supporting the next generation so they can carry the torch of our heritage with the same passion I see in my elders today.

This community is thriving, and it is united! I’m committed to continuing to blog about our community to inform everyone and to encourage more people to get involved!
