FRAUD PREVENTION STARTS WITH KNOWLEDGE

Online financial fraud is on the rise. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to protect yourself and your business from cybercrime. Check out these six tips, share with your teams, and mitigate your risks of financial fraud online.

As a victim of cybercrime myself, I’m well aware of the fight against fraud and cyber criminals. I have experienced our systems being down for weeks due to a targeted attack. The amount of stories from friends, colleagues, and professionals came rushing in as well, and I’m amazed at the level to which these criminals will go to defraud you of your personal access and data.

Here are some great ways to start protecting yourself:

  1. Be cautious with links.

Scammers may impersonate sites or other organizations and try to deceive you into visiting a malicious website. Take a moment before taking any action, such as clicking on links or attachments. For online business banking, always open sites by typing the domain into your browser. Bookmark the correct URL so that you are on the legitimate website every time.

  1. Keep your passwords personal.

Remember that you shouldn’t be asked for your login information, password, or one-time passcodes. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call your administrator.

  1. Pick strong passwords.

Make them unique and change them often. They should be long and hard to guess. Use symbols, numbers, and special characters. Activating two-factor authentication is also required for account access. Never share your passwords with anyone.

  1. Look before you log in.

Fraudsters can create fake web pages to collect your personal information. To log in securely, always head to the legitimate website and click the “Sign In” button at the top of the screen. When you have completed your banking, make sure to use the “Sign Out” button to end the session.

  1. Stay current.

Keep operating systems and antivirus software up-to-date on all of your devices to access the latest fraud prevention measures. Learn about the tools available to help protect your devices and accounts and improve your overall cybersecurity.

  1. Back up, back up, back up.

Keep operating systems and files backed up as much as you can. Cyber criminals love stealing your data and holding you for ransom. It’s the best way to secure your data! The fraudster will attack your backup, so a hard copy backup periodically is the best way to prevent the loss of your data and information.

Remember, we’re all in the fight against fraud together.

Sincerely,
